When I first heard armageddon speaking's Kobayashi Maru, I felt this imperative, tugging on my heart. I was transported to a time that, although never far from me, eludes memory without some instigation. On first listening, I was rocketed back to that first sweet moment, when I met him, the first person I ever really knew.

I am not so for nostalgia, but I know it is important to return to grief and to bathe in its occasional wells of sweetness, when they coalesce. I only knew my first best friend for two or so years. His sparkling mind, the sun that shone through the down on his golden cheeks, through his canary blonde hair. Devastating for a little kid, to know such joy and loss in the otherwise crushing gravity of an often lonely childhood. He passed away so suddenly and for a long time, I didn't know what to do. A lot has worked itself out since then but it is defining, that time, a companion evermore.

I do believe it is important to hold moments like that up, to turn them like an opal, to see what they reveal. To remember the fantastic world of unfettered make-believe, swooning with exaltation and monsters that exist only between the two. I remixed this coz it evoked for me that tang, that knock-kneed infatuation of new friendship. I've tried to preserve something of that feeling in how I shaped this mix. The not fully formed, the longing and loss and glee, braided together that keep me tethered here and alive. It is dear to let that newness alight for a moment. I hope that conveys itself.

Devotion is the most broken offering.

A marvellously textured album, rich in contrast, filled with fluttering ideas, gently turning ostinati, warm colours and a richly varied tapestry of electronic sounds. Hard to choose a favourite track, but '1AD' just pips the opening by an electro-whisper. Modern Music Dan
